Osteopathy

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy that addresses the entirety of the body's structures, such as muscles, nerves, joints, bones, lymphatic system, vascular system and the various connective tissues.  It is based on a unique underlying treatment philosophy which is what sets Osteopathic treatment apart from other forms of manual therapy.

Osteopathic treatment is a scientifically validated form of treatment, and is recognised by the World Health Organisation and various international medical journals.

What is the Osteopathic Philosophy?

1. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated

2. The body  is a single dynamic unit of function; mind, body and spirit.

3. The body is capable of self-repair, self- healing and health maintenance.

4. Rational treatment is based on the employment of above 3 principles.

What training do Osteopaths partake?

Osteopaths are required to complete 5 years of university training consisting of a 3 year Bachelors degree and a 2 year Masters degree.  Once completed, your Osteopath is a statutorily registered practitioner.

What techniques will be used during the consultation?

The techniques that your Osteopath chooses to use during your consultation are based upon your presentation, information from your medical history that may affect safety the techniques (eg DVT or osteoporosis), treatment objectives and your consent.  The techniques include, but are not limited to: MET, joint articulation, HVLA (spinal manipluation), soft tissue massage, visceral release, cranial osteopathy, BLT, counterstrain, core strengthening and rehabilitative exercises.

What to Expect?

The initial consult goes for 45-60 minutes.  On arrival you will be asked to complete a form regarding your medical and health history.  Your Osteopath will then take you into the consultation rooms to go over and expand on this information.  A thorough examination will be performed to allow a diagnosis to be made.  If we feel your presentation would respond to Osteopathic treatment, and you are happy with our treatment and management plan, the treatment will then commence .  If relevant, you will be given some advice regarding changes you could make to your daily activities that may assist in your recovery , eg moving the computer mouse closer, adjusting your car seat a particular way, or a stretch you could do to relieve tense tissue.
